Also known as C145 copper, Copper 145, Alloy 145, Alloy C14500, 145 half-hard tellurium, or TeCu, this material contains between 0.4 and 0.7% of tellurium as well as 0.004 and 0.120% of phosphorous. Tellurium copper demonstrates good electrical and thermal conductivity, good formability, and high machinability. These properties make it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.
Properties of Tellurium Copper (C145 Copper)
C145 belongs to the free-machining copper category, offering machinability far exceeding that of pure copper. While pure copper has a machinability rating of 20%, this alloy boasts a machinability rating of 85%, enabling faster machining and longer tool life. This is due to the precipitation of copper telluride within the C145 microstructure, which creates short chips. Telluride copper is also highly conductive, making it well-suited for electrical applications.

Resistance to atmospheric corrosion
Resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (i.e., cracking and strength loss caused by the introduction and diffusion of hydrogen)
High thermal conductivity (205 BTU/ft2/ft./hr./°F) and electrical conductivity (90% according to IACS standards)
Tensile strength of 47,900 psi (approximately 38 to 48 ksi)
Yield strength of 44,200 psi (approximately 30 to 40 ksi)
Elongation between 4% and 12%
Hardness between 65 and 130 HV
Maintains structural integrity up to 350°C
Good formability (suitable for cold and hot forming processes)
Machinability of 85% to 90% (free-cutting brass machinability of 100%)
Suitable for brazing and soldering
Unsuitable for certain welding processes, such as coated metal arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, resistance welding, seam welding, and spot welding

Pure copper is soft, whereas tellurium copper delivers a hard alternative with high tensile strength. As discussed, the tellurium content within C145 copper causes clean, short chips. This enables manufacturers to cut the material five times as fast as cutting pure copper. In addition to improving machinability and speed, this also reduces tool wear so tooling will last longer. Added to tellurium copper's high electrical conductivity and hydrogen embrittlement resistance, these factors all make the alloy an optimal material for applications in the electrical industry.
