Three patterns emerge from the trend. First, sponge titanium Grade 0# declined steadily from approximately ¥50,000 to ¥45,500/ton-a 9% drop-reflecting China's capacity expansion (July output hit 27,100 tons, up 17.5% year-on-year) and inventory accumulation across four consecutive weeks. Second, TC4 aerospace alloy ingot fell more moderately, from ¥68,000 to ¥65,000/ton, as robust aircraft production and defense spending absorbed the supply increase. Third, TA2 pure titanium ingot tracked sponge costs downward to ¥54,000–55,000/ton, with limited further downside as processors operate near breakeven. The price gap between aerospace-grade and civil-grade titanium has widened significantly-this divergence is structural, not cyclical.

 

Market Overview & Regional Analysis

China

Overcapacity defines the domestic market. Industry operating rates exceed 82%, with new capacity from Panzhihua and Liaoning continuously releasing. Social inventory has accumulated for four consecutive weeks. Downstream demand from chemicals, electroplating, and civilian equipment has dropped over 40% year-on-year. However, aerospace and defense titanium orders maintain resilience, with TC4 forging orders up 16% month-on-month at leading producers. Several large sponge titanium producers have initiated production cuts-a signal that prices may be bottoming.

 

Europe

Holds the highest titanium prices globally at $13.76–15.20/kg. The region faces a structural supply gap as Russia pushes to halt aviation-grade titanium exports. VSMPO-AVISMA, Russia's largest producer and historically a primary European supplier, has seen capacity utilization fall below 60%-dropping from 32,000 to approximately 17,000 tons. French aerospace (annual revenue exceeding €85 billion) faces direct supply chain pressure. Western buyers are rebuilding alternative supply networks, but meaningful replacement capacity requires 3–5 years.

 

North America

The most price-stable region at $6.17–6.81/kg, anchored by domestic sponge production capacity. Aerospace demand remains strong, keeping supply tight despite ample raw material availability.

 

Northeast Asia

Prices hold at $6.93–7.65/kg, supported by steady Japanese and Korean aerospace demand. Japan's Toho Titanium is expanding capacity to capture Western aerospace supply share vacated by Russia.

 

Key Market Drivers

Russia's titanium export ban. Russia is advancing legislation to halt aviation-grade titanium exports to Europe. Analysts estimate Western aerospace-grade prices could rise 20–40% above current contract levels if VSMPO's supply is fully cut. Europe bears the most immediate impact; North American buyers are more insulated due to existing domestic supply agreements.

 

China's export controls. Since October 2025, new regulations include a "long-arm jurisdiction" clause-products containing Chinese-controlled raw materials above a value threshold require Chinese government approval for re-export. This significantly increases compliance costs for global supply chains relying on Chinese feedstock.

 

"Non-China-Russia" supply chain formation. Western aerospace OEMs are accelerating supply chains independent of both China and Russia. ATI (US) and Toho Titanium (Japan) are securing long-term contracts and localizing production. This structural shift will persistently elevate high-end titanium procurement costs.

 

Aerospace demand acceleration. Airbus forecasts over 42,000 new commercial aircraft over the next 20 years. Commercial deliveries are projected at 1,350 units in 2026, rising to 2,550 by 2037. Civil & industrial demand weakness. Downstream coatings, plastics, and construction sectors are in traditional off-season. Real estate recovery remains sluggish. China's titanium trade data reveals a clear export-oriented posture. Sponge titanium exports in July reached 572.4 tons, up 33% year-on-year, primarily flowing to Vietnam, India, and South Korea for industrial applications. Imports fell to 56.8 tons, down 77.5% month-on-month-confirming near-complete domestic self-sufficiency for standard grades. Only ultra-high-purity and military-specification grades still require overseas sourcing, with total H1 imports under 200 tons.

 

Among processed products, titanium tube exports grew 36% year-on-year in H1 2026-the strongest growth category, signaling robust international demand for Chinese tubular products. For international buyers, this confirms China's position as a reliable, high-volume supplier of industrial-grade titanium with growing export capacity across plates, bars, wires, and strips.

 

Industry Developments

Jin Titanium IPO (Aug 19). Priced at ¥9.72/share, raising ¥437 million for a 20,000-ton aerospace-grade sponge titanium project. Its aviation rotor-grade sponge titanium reportedly outperforms Russia's TG-90 and Japan's S-90 on impurity and hardness metrics.

 

LB Group UK plant restart (Aug 18). The Hartlepool chloride-process titanium oxide plant fully resumed, boosting total chloride capacity to 810,000 tons/year and strengthening global pricing power in titanium pigment.

 

Pangang special titanium alloy pipe. Achieved 98%+ double-inspection pass rate for special titanium alloy pipes-critical materials for aerospace and high-end energy equipment. This marks a breakthrough in domestic high-end titanium processing consistency.

 

Xiaomi + Anhui Zhongti. Joint patent application for titanium alloy additive manufacturing powder, targeting new energy vehicle lightweighting and complex structural components-a potential new demand driver.

 

Farnborough Airshow. 20+ Chinese titanium companies attended seeking Western aerospace clients, with at least three claiming their material is already used in Airbus aircraft.

Short-term (1–2 months)

The off-season continues through late August. Chinese civil-grade titanium prices are likely to remain soft. Monitor whether September restocking triggers price stabilization-this is the key inflection point to watch.

 

Medium-term (3–6 months)

Aerospace-grade TC4 prices are expected to hold firm or rise moderately as the Russia supply gap widens and aircraft production rates increase. Civil-grade prices may find a floor as large producers cut output. The high-end vs. civil-grade price gap will likely persist or widen.

 

Key risk factor: VSMPO-AVISMA's operational status is the single most important variable. Any disruption to its export volumes would cascade globally. New alternative sponge capacity (Japan, Saudi Arabia, US) requires 3–5 years minimum to meaningfully impact supply.

 

Procurement recommendations

Current Chinese industrial-grade titanium pricing represents a favorable buying window due to domestic overcapacity.

For aerospace-grade materials, consider locking in long-term contracts before the demand cycle peaks and supply tightens further.

Diversify supply sources-the lesson from Russian titanium is that apparent commercial stability can evaporate quickly.
