Metal Share Versus Conversion: Which Forms You Can Still Negotiate
This is the section worth acting on. Sponge rose 3.09% this week. If your product were priced off metal alone, every form would move by roughly 3.09% of its metal leg. Here is what actually happened.
| Product form | Quote USD/kg | Metal leg | Conversion leg | Metal share | Metal-explainable move | Actual move | Driven by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Billet / forging stock (Gr5) | 45.94 | 31.24 | 14.70 | 68% | +0.97 | +2.08 | Mixed - metal plus melting queue |
| Plate (B265) | 22.83 | 12.56 | 10.27 | 55% | +0.39 | +0.67 | Metal-led - negotiation works |
| Bar (B348) | 22.02 | 11.45 | 10.57 | 52% | +0.35 | +0.61 | Metal-led - negotiation works |
| Tube, seamless (B338) | 25.78 | 11.34 | 14.44 | 44% | +0.35 | +0.63 | Mixed |
| Strip / coil (B265) | 24.78 | 9.91 | 14.87 | 40% | +0.31 | +0.68 | Capacity-led |
| Wire (B863) | 27.55 | 9.92 | 17.63 | 36% | +0.31 | +0.75 | Capacity-led - book the drawing line |
| Fine wire / foil | 32.50 | 9.10 | 23.40 | 28% | +0.28 | +0.88 | Capacity-led - price talk is wasted |

Only 42% of this week's plate increase is metal. On fine wire it is 32%. The gradient is clean: the thinner and more heavily processed the form, the more of the increase is mill capacity and margin rather than raw material. The procurement consequence is direct - on plate, bar and billet, a metal-linked contract with a cap genuinely protects you. On wire, foil and thin strip it does not, because you are not buying metal, you are buying a place in a drawing or rolling queue. For those forms the only lever is commitment: earlier and firmer orders get scheduled, and everything else waits.
Titanium Grade Equivalents
Titanium is standardised under four parallel systems and the mapping is mostly one-to-one - which is exactly what makes it dangerous. GB TA2 is close to ASTM Gr2 but not identical, and the difference sits in the oxygen and iron windows that you will not see unless the certificate reports actuals.
| ASTM / ASME | UNS | Common name | EN / DIN (material no.) | GB | JIS | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gr1 | R50250 | CP titanium grade 1 | 3.7025 | TA1 | Class 1 | Softest, best formability - deep drawing and plate heat exchangers only |
| Gr2 | R50400 | CP titanium grade 2 | 3.7035 | TA2 | Class 2 | The workhorse, roughly 70% of all CP titanium. Confirm actual O and Fe - the O band runs 0.13% to 0.25% and changes formability |
| Gr3 | R50550 | CP titanium grade 3 | 3.7055 | TA3 | Class 3 | Higher-strength CP for pressure boundary work |
| Gr4 | R50700 | CP titanium grade 4 | 3.7065 | TA4 | Class 4 | Strongest CP grade; instruments and fasteners |
| Gr5 | R56400 | Ti-6Al-4V | 3.7165 | TC4 | Class 60 | Roughly half of all titanium sold. GB TC4 has a wider aluminium window than ASTM Gr5 - check the certificate if the part is fatigue-critical |
| Gr7 | R52400 | Ti-0.15Pd | 3.7235 | TA9 | Class 12 | Palladium-bearing. Verify Pd content is reported - it is the entire reason the grade exists and it is expensive |
| Gr9 | R56320 | Ti-3Al-2.5V | 3.7195 | TA18 | Class 61 | Cold-formable tube grade - aerospace hydraulics, bicycle frames |
| Gr11 | R52250 | Ti-0.15Pd, low O | - | TA9-1 | Class 11 | Gr7 chemistry at Gr1 strength |
| Gr12 | R53400 | Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni | 3.7105 | TA10 | Class 13 | Hot brine and crevice service - the cheap alternative to Gr7 |
| Gr23 | R56407 | Ti-6Al-4V ELI | 3.7165 ELI | TC4 ELI | Class 60 ELI | Implant and cryogenic grade. Governed by ASTM F136, not just B265 - an F136 order needs the full implant documentation set |
Three Cross-Reference Traps
ASTM versus AMS is not a paperwork difference. AMS 4911 (Gr5 plate and sheet) and AMS 4928 (Gr5 bar) add microstructure, surface-contamination and ultrasonic inspection requirements on top of ASTM B265 and B348. A B265 lot will not clear an AMS 4911 line item, and the price difference is real.
EN 10204 3.2 is not satisfied by a 3.1 certificate. European pressure-equipment orders routinely call for 3.2 with third-party witness. If your drawing is EN-based, say so at RFQ stage - third-party witness adds 2–3 weeks to lead time and has to be booked when the order is placed.
GB TA-series grades are close equivalents, not exact ones. TA2 and Gr2 share nominal chemistry but differ in the interstitial windows and in thickness tolerance. If the part is pressure boundary, fatigue-loaded or implant-related, specify the ASTM or AMS grade and require actual chemistry and mechanicals on the certificate rather than accepting the GB equivalent.
Grade Selection Reference - Which Titanium Grade For Which Service
| Grade | Plate mid USD/kg | vs Gr2 | Choose it when | Avoid it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gr1 | 24.64 | +0.82 | Deep drawing, explosive forming, plate heat exchangers - maximum formability | Any load-bearing or pressure service |
| Gr2 | 23.82 | baseline | Default: chemical process, marine, heat exchangers, architecture | Above 300 °C; reducing acids; hot brine crevice |
| Gr3 | 25.40 | +1.58 | Pressure vessels, shells - higher-strength CP | Where weld ductility dominates |
| Gr4 | 26.93 | +3.11 | Strongest CP grade: instruments, fasteners, airframe fittings | Severe forming - elongation minimum is only 15% |
| Gr5 | 41.32 | +17.50 | Aerospace, motorsport, high strength-to-weight, service to 350 °C | Cost-sensitive work where CP strength is adequate |
| Gr7 | 46.98 | +23.16 | Reducing acids and hot chloride crevice - the Pd does the work | Anything else. Pd is expensive and unnecessary outside reducing service |
| Gr9 | 43.45 | +19.63 | Cold-formable tube: aerospace hydraulics, bicycle and motorsport frames | Flat products - Gr5 is usually better value |
| Gr12 | 34.40 | +10.58 | Hot brine, crevice corrosion, elevated-temperature chemical service - the cheap alternative to Gr7 | Where Gr2 already passes - it is $10.58/kg more |
| Gr23 | 54.65 | +30.83 | Implants (ASTM F136), cryogenic, fracture-critical | Non-medical work - use Gr5 and save $13.33/kg |
One substitution that pays for itself repeatedly: Gr12 at +$10.58/kg over Gr2 is the standard answer for hot brine and crevice corrosion, and it is $12.58/kg cheaper than Gr7. If your service is hot chloride rather than a reducing acid, Gr12 is usually the right call and Gr7 is usually over-specified.
What To Do This Week, By Titanium Product
| Product | Metal share | Change | Lead time | Action this week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plate (B265) | 55% | +0.67 | 5–8 weeks | Metal-linked contract with a cap works here. Cover Q4 now; put Q1 on index. Titanium plate |
| Bar (B348) | 52% | +0.61 | 4–7 weeks | Same as plate. Book Gr5 billet earliest - it moved $2.08/kg, the largest line in the complex. Titanium bar |
| Tube, seamless (B338) | 44% | +0.63 | 8–14 weeks | Lead time is the binding constraint, not price. Order to schedule; consider welded B862 where the code permits - it is $2.88–3.58/kg cheaper and 3–4 weeks faster. Titanium tube |
| Strip / coil (B265) | 40% | +0.68 | 6–10 weeks | Capacity-led. Commit early rather than negotiating metal. Titanium strip and coil |
| Wire (B863) | 36% | +0.75 | 6–10 weeks | Book the drawing line. Only 41% of the increase is metal, so price argument has almost no leverage. Titanium wire |
| Fine wire / foil | 28% | +0.88 | 10–16 weeks | Earliest possible commitment of all five product lines. Longest queue, lowest metal exposure, highest capacity sensitivity |
