ASTM B760 Tungsten Plate
Because of its high melting point and strength, tungsten and its alloys are used in a wide range of high-temperature applications, such as arc welding electrodes, heating elements and shields in high-temperature vacuum furnaces, and turbine blades in power generators and aircraft engines.
Tungsten is the most commonly used target material for X-ray generation. Tungsten's high atomic number increases the intensity of X-rays at certain voltages and currents. Tungsten's high melting point also whitens the X-ray anode.
Tungsten alloy combines high density, high radiation absorption, high melting point, and good corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material for shielding against various types of radiation.
Armor-piercing ammunition uses the kinetic energy of the projectile to destroy an enemy target. Kinetic energy is a function of mass and speed to target (terminal velocity). The mass depends on the density and the terminal velocity depends on the density and melting temperature. Tungsten has both of these advantages.
