Properties, applications and surface nanosizing of titanium and titanium alloys

Mar 24, 2025

Titanium is abundant in the earth, occupying the ninth place, and its reserves are about 0.44% to 0.57%. Titanium is silver-white in pure state with metallic luster and extremely high melting point. Titanium has two isomers: α-Ti and β-Ti, of which α-Ti is stable below 882°C, while β-Ti remains stable between 882°C and 1678°C.
Due to its excellent properties, such as high density, high specific strength, corrosion and high temperature resistance, good mechanical and mechanical properties, light weight and good biocompatibility, titanium has been widely used in various industries, including chemical, aerospace, medical materials and electronics industries.
However, with the progress of society and the development of science, the performance of titanium and titanium alloys can no longer meet all the needs. Therefore, how to modify them to break through the limitations of their use has become an urgent problem. The application of nanotechnology provides a new way to modify titanium and titanium alloys. The direct preparation of nanobody materials has high cost and small output, while the surface nanosizing technology is relatively low cost and the operation technology is simple and mature.

There are various methods for surface modification of titanium and titanium alloys, among which anodizing is a simple and effective surface treatment method. Anodic oxidation achieves specimen surface nanosizing by electrochemical methods that produce an oxide film on the metal or alloy. A set of TiO2 nanotubes with controllable length and diameter can be obtained by adjusting the concentration of electrolyte, the magnitude of voltage and current, and the length of reaction time. The anodic oxidation reaction process mainly includes two reaction processes, the formation and dissolution of TiO2, and the nanotubes are finally produced through the cycle of these two reactions.
In the future, with the continuous progress of science and technology, the application fields of titanium and titanium alloys will be further expanded, and the requirements for material properties will be further improved. Titanium and titanium alloys will develop in the direction of high temperature resistance, higher strength, better plasticity and better wear resistance. At the same time, the surface treatment technology of titanium alloy will be more advanced, after the surface of the titanium alloy nano-treatment of the surface anti-friction properties, acid corrosion resistance will be further improved. In the new era, titanium and titanium alloys will achieve greater development.
