For procurement teams buying C12200 seamless tube for air-conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, or heat-exchanger service, the message is clear: the cathode benchmark has stabilized after its early-September round trip, but the physical layers on top of it are getting more expensive. With the US refined-copper tariff decision due by September 30, the next ten days are the window in which Q4 supply chains get locked in.

The Physical Layer Is Tightening Faster Than The Benchmark
The chart above shows two things moving together, but one is moving faster. The Yangshan bonded-warehouse premium started September around $78 per tonne and closed the week at $121 per tonne, a 55% increase in three weeks. Over the same period, the LME 3-month copper price rose roughly 4% from $13,960 to $14,515. The premium is signaling that Chinese physical demand is accelerating relative to the benchmark.
Several factors are driving this:
Pre-National Day stockpiling. Chinese manufacturers typically build raw-material inventory ahead of the October 1 holiday and the subsequent Q4 export push. The holiday is now ten days away, and tube mills are positioning for a busy October.
SHFE inventory at multi-year lows. SHFE registered copper stocks remain near 54,780 tonnes, which is close to the lowest level since early 2024. With domestic cathode scarce, buyers turn to imported material, lifting the Yangshan premium.
Concentrate supply remains constrained. Spot treatment charges are stuck near -$210 per dry metric tonne. Smelters are losing money on every tonne they produce, and output cuts are being announced by higher-cost producers. Less refined cathode ahead means tighter tube feedstock.
Import arbitrage opened briefly. The import window turned positive to around +600 yuan per tonne after the LME dip, encouraging traders to book cargoes. But port congestion and shipping schedules mean those cargoes will not arrive for several weeks, leaving the spot market tight in the meantime.
How C12200 Tube Pricing Is Stacked Right Now
Every C12200 seamless tube invoice can be decomposed into the same three layers, but the size of each layer has changed over the past two weeks.
| Pricing layer | Indicative level for C12200 ACR tube | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| LME Grade A cathode benchmark | $14,515 / tonne | Layer 1; volatile but off the lows |
| Yangshan / import premium | $121 / tonne | Highest in 4 years; reflects Chinese physical tightness |
| C12200 tube conversion premium | $1,400–$2,500 / tonne | Depends on OD/wall/temper/ASTM standard |
| Indicative delivered C12200 ACR tube cost | $16,036–$17,136 / tonne | Before freight, duty, and local handling |
The conversion premium for C12200 tube is wider than for C11000 tube for three process reasons: the bright-annealed internal surface required by ASTM B68, the nitrogen purge and cleanliness verification, and the hydrostatic and eddy-current testing that are standard for refrigerant service rather than optional.
Demand Side: Q4 ACR Production Is About To Accelerate
C12200 seamless tube is the standard material for refrigerant lines, coil headers, and heat-pump circuits. Its largest end-use channel is residential and light-commercial air-conditioning manufacturing, which is transitioning from the September production trough into the Q4 export and inventory-build cycle.
Industry production schedules for the September–November window are now tracking approximately -8%, +12%, and +17% year-on-year. The swing from an 8% contraction to a 17% expansion in three months is unusually sharp and is the single most important demand signal for DHP tube buyers. Three factors are behind it:
European retail inventory restocking after the prolonged destocking of 2024–2025.
Heat-pump subsidy programs in several European and North American markets, which use the same C12200 tube families as conventional AC systems.
The seasonal build for next spring's cooling season, which requires finished units on retail shelves by April.
For tube buyers, this means the current dip in LME prices is happening at exactly the wrong time to be waiting. Demand is about to step up just as supply-side constraints - concentrate shortages and smelter losses - are limiting refined cathode availability.
The September 30 Tariff Countdown: Three Scenarios
The next binary event is the US decision on whether to extend Section 232-style duties to refined copper cathode. The current regime already covers semi-finished copper products; cathode itself has so far been excluded. Reports this week suggest the administration is still weighing the decision, with officials focused on both strategic supply-chain goals and near-term manufacturing costs.
Scenario A: Cathode remains excluded or the decision is delayed. The recent unwind of the transatlantic arbitrage trade continues. COMEX-LME premium structures compress further, and some metal that had been diverted to US warehouses flows back into European and Asian markets. C12200 tube feedstock becomes more available outside the US, and cathode premiums soften modestly.
Scenario B: A phased duty is announced. A common structure discussed is a 15% duty starting January 1, 2027, rising to 30% a year later. This would re-ignite the relocation trade, pull more cathode into US warehouses, and tighten non-US supply. C12200 tube prices outside the US would rise faster than the LME benchmark.
Scenario C: A sharp, immediate duty is imposed. This is the low-probability tail risk but the high-impact one. It would cause a sudden repricing of COMEX copper, a renewed squeeze in LME-linked supply, and immediate premium volatility. Tube buyers with US exposure should have tariff-inclusion clauses in their contracts.
Procurement Recommendations For C12200 Tube Buyers
Cover October and November tube requirements now. LME Layer 1 may fluctuate, but the conversion premium and lead time for C12200 ACR tube are both heading higher into Q4. Locking the premium now protects against the seasonal squeeze.
Specify ASTM B68 / B75 and require MTC verification. C12200 tube is not interchangeable with C11000 in brazed or refrigerant systems. The mill test certificate should confirm phosphorus content (0.015–0.040%), oxygen not greater than 10 ppm, and the relevant ASTM standard for the ordered temper and surface finish.
Add a tariff-adjustment clause for US-bound shipments. With the September 30 decision pending, any fixed-price contract shipping into North America should include language that adjusts for new duties or origin-rule changes.
Track the Yangshan premium as a real-time demand gauge. When the premium is rising faster than LME copper, it signals that Chinese physical demand is pulling ahead of supply. That is the phase in which tube premiums rise next.
Plan around the October 1–7 holiday window. Chinese mills and ports will slow during the National Day break. Orders confirmed before September 25 are far more likely to ship on schedule than orders placed during the holiday week.
