Peru Formulates New Standards To Strengthen Mineral Resource Supervision

Nov 20, 2023

Under the so-called Plan Unidos, the Peruvian government calls for the implementation of 25 measures to revitalize the country's economy, especially the mining, energy and oil and gas industries.

The Peruvian national news agency (Andina) reported last weekend that the country’s government plans to issue 13 new standards to strengthen the management and regulation of mineral exploration and development activities.

In the case of exploration, the purpose is to optimize environmental requirements and Prior Consultation Processes.

In terms of mining production, the Peruvian government plans to improve occupational safety and health supervision and strengthen mineral rights transfer management to ensure that it meets the needs of specific regions or industries.

Peruvian Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras noted that the cabinet will further study and make necessary changes to the system concerning archaeology, environmental adaptation and mineral rights in border areas.

Contreras also said that measures will be formulated to attract US$1.5 billion in investment in the production of fertilizers (urea) and explosives (ammonium nitrate), and to develop plans for the development of renewable energy, especially wind and solar projects.

Peru is the world's second largest copper producer after Chile and an important silver and zinc producer.
