Testing Of Medical Gas Pipework

Dec 12, 2023

Australian Standard AS2896-1998 states.

Material.
Copper tubing used in medical gas pipework shall be "drawn" seamless tubing, manufactured in accordance with AS/NZS 1571.
Copper fittings shall conform to the requirements of ASME B 16.22.
All components of the pipework shall be compatible with oxygen and shall be clean and free from oil, grease and particulate matter.
Components include vessels, tubing, lubricants, fittings, gaskets, etc.
Compatibility relates to flammability and combustibility. Materials that burn in air will also burn violently in pure oxygen.
Maintenance and cleaning of pipework and components;
MM Kembla medical gas tubing conforms to AS/NZS 1571 and is factory cleaned, degreased and capped prior to delivery. The tubes must not be cleaned on site unless the necessary blowing operations are carried out to remove any particles entrained during installation.
MM Kembla fittings are delivered clean and free from contamination during delivery to the site.
Particular care should be taken when storing and handling all medical gas tubes and fittings. After cutting, tubes should be temporarily capped or plugged to prevent contamination prior to final assembly. Tools used for cutting or reaming should be kept free of oil or grease.
Existing systems should be cut using a radial tube cutter that does not produce swarf or filings.

Design Requirements for Medical Gas Piping
Pipe and fitting sizes should be selected to provide the required design flow throughout the healthcare facility.
The nominal design working pressure is 415 kPa for medical gas supply, -60 kPa for medical suction, and 1400 kPa for surgical tool supply.
Flow requirements should be determined on the basis of discussions with the healthcare organisation to determine the expected and projected gas usage and the amount of terminal equipment required.
All medical gas pipework shall be designed, manufactured, installed and inspected in accordance with AS 4041.
Piping Protection;
Piping in exposed areas shall be protected from physical damage.
Buried pipework shall be adequately protected against frost, corrosion and physical damage.
If buried in direct contact with certain corrosive environments, copper pipes may suffer severe corrosion.
MM Kembla Kemlag jacketing can be installed and protects copper pipe sizes 12.##7mm (1/2") and 19.##05 (3/4").
Medical gas pipework may be placed in the same tunnels, trenches or ducts as gas or steam pipework, provided that such medical gas pipework is at least 50 mm away from other installations and is well ventilated.
Medical gas pipework must not be;
Be placed in tunnels where they may come into contact with oil.
Be installed in or through any air ducts, clothing chutes, lift shafts, waste chutes or ventilation ducts.
It is not recommended that medical gas pipework be poured in reinforced concrete or installed under ground floor slabs.
Where pipework passes through masonry walls, partitions or floors, it should be fitted with protective sleeving.IE. MM Kembla Kemlag sleeving.
Fluxless brazing technology
All joints (copper pipes and fittings) shall be brazed.
All brazing alloys used in the manufacture of pipes and fittings shall conform to alloy designation B4 as specified in AS 1167.1.
Fluxes shall not be used on site. For off-site applications, only water-based fluxes shall be used.
Commercial grade carbon dioxide shall be used as internal inert gas protection during brazing operations.
Fluxless techniques using an inert atmosphere prevent flux residues and oxidised skin from contaminating the interior of the pipe and minimise the risk of brazing fires.
Upon completion, the work needs to be purged and tested for particulate matter and carbon dioxide.
