What Is Enameled Wire? And How Is It Related To Copper?

Aug 14, 2025

Enameled wire is a type of winding wire. It's made by coating a layer of insulating varnish on a metal conductor like copper or aluminum and then drying it to create a magnetic wire.
This insulating varnish insulates the wires from each other, preventing current leakage and allowing them to withstand a certain voltage.
Enameled wire is primarily used for windings in electrical equipment such as motors, transformers, reactors, and relays. For example, in a common small DC motor, enameled wire is wound around the rotor and stator. When current passes through the enameled wire windings, it generates a magnetic field, driving the motor.

Copper is one of the most commonly used materials for enameled wire.

Copper has excellent electrical conductivity and a low resistivity. At standard atmospheric pressure and room temperature, copper's resistivity is very low, allowing it to efficiently transmit current and reduce energy loss. For example, in power transmission, copper conductors allow electricity to reach its destination more efficiently than other metals. Therefore, copper is often used as the core material for enameled wire!

The copper conductor, the base material of enameled wire, is coated with insulating varnish to become enameled wire. Insulating varnishes, which can be applied in various types such as polyester and polyimide, allow copper wires in electrical equipment to safely carry current without causing short circuits due to contact with other components or between windings. For example, in transformers, enameled copper wires are tightly wound together. Without the protection of insulating varnish, current would flow freely between the wires, potentially causing the transformer to malfunction.
