What Is CuZn16Si4-B
CuZn16Si4-B, material number CB761S, is a copper-zinc-silicon alloy specified in EN 1982 for ingots and castings. The suffix B identifies the material in the form of ingots. The silicon addition provides improved strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance compared with binary brasses.
Chemical Composition
The composition limits are silicon 3 to 5 percent, copper 78.5 to 82 percent, iron maximum 0.5 percent, manganese maximum 0.2 percent, nickel maximum 1 percent, phosphorus maximum 0.02 percent, aluminum maximum 0.1 percent, lead maximum 0.6 percent, antimony maximum 0.05 percent, and tin maximum 0.25 percent, with zinc as remainder.
Mechanical Properties
In sand castings the tensile strength is 400 MPa with 0.2 percent proof strength of 230 MPa and elongation of 10 percent. In permanent mould and centrifugal castings the tensile strength is 500 MPa with proof strength of 300 MPa and elongation of 8 percent. Brinell hardness is 100 HBW for sand castings and 130 HBW for permanent mould and centrifugal castings.
Key Properties
Silicon brass offers high strength and hardness with good corrosion resistance, particularly in seawater and industrial atmospheres. The alloy also provides good wear resistance and castability, producing sound castings with smooth surfaces.
Applications
CuZn16Si4-B ingots are remelted to produce marine hardware, valve bodies, pump components, propellers, and corrosion-resistant fittings where the combination of strength and corrosion resistance is required.
