What Is Special Brass

Special brass, also called complex brass, is a multi-element alloy formed by adding other alloying elements to ordinary brass. Commonly added elements include lead, tin, and aluminum, producing lead brass, tin brass, and aluminum brass respectively. Brasses containing more than three elements are called special brass or complex brass.

Why Density Varies

Because special brass contains multiple elements, and each element has a different density and content, the density of the resulting alloy also differs. Designers use these values for weight calculations of bars, plates, and machined parts, and for estimating material requirements.

Lead Brass Density

Lead brass densities include HPb89-2 at 8.85 g per cubic centimeter, HPb66-0.5 at 8.5, HPb63-3 at 8.5, HPb62-3 at 8.5, HPb62-2 at 8.5, HPb61-1 at 8.41, HPb60-2 at 8.44, and HPb59-1 at 8.5. The density decreases as the lead and zinc content rise.

Tin and Manganese Brass Density

Tin brass densities include HSn90-1 at 8.8, HSn70-1 at 8.58, HSn62-1 at 8.45, and HSn60-1 at 8.45 g per cubic centimeter. Manganese brass densities include HMn57-3-1 at 8.1, HMn58-2 at 8.5, and HMn62-3-3-0.7 at 8.02.

Other Special Brass Density

Iron brass HFe59-1-1 has a density of 8.5, nickel brass HNi65-5 is 8.65, and silicon brass HSi80-3 is 8.6 g per cubic centimeter. Aluminum brass densities include HA177-2 at 8.6, HA167-2.5 at 8.5, HA166-6-3-2 at 8.5, HA161-4-3-1 at 7.909, HA160-1-1 at 8.2, and HA159-3-2 at 8.4.
