How Do I Choose the Right Brass Alloy?

Jan 13, 2026

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is one of the most versatile and widely used materials in engineering, construction, and design. With numerous brass alloys available-each with unique properties-selecting the right one can be challenging. Whether you're designing mechanical components, electrical systems, architectural features, or marine hardware, making the right choice ensures durability, functionality, and cost-effectiveness. Here's a practical guide to help you choose the best brass alloy for your project.

Understand Your Project's Core Requirements

Start by defining what you need the brass to do. Key considerations include:

Mechanical Strength: Does the part need to withstand high stress, wear, or impact?

Corrosion Resistance: Will it be exposed to moisture, chemicals, or outdoor environments?

Machinability: Will the part require extensive drilling, turning, or threading?

Electrical/Thermal Conductivity: Is efficient conduction a priority?

Formability: Does it need to be bent, stamped, or shaped?

Aesthetic Appeal: Is color, finish, or tarnish resistance important?

Cost: Are you working within a strict budget?

Know the Common Brass Alloys and Their Strengths

C26000 (Cartridge Brass):
Contains about 70% copper and 30% zinc. Excellent cold-working properties, good strength, and high ductility. Ideal for ammunition casings, hardware, and decorative parts.

C36000 (Free-Cutting Brass):
Known for exceptional machinability (rated 100% on the machinability index). Contains a small amount of lead (Pb). Perfect for high-volume CNC machining of screws, valves, and fittings.

C46400 (Naval Brass):
Includes about 60% copper, 39% zinc, and 1% tin (Sn). Tin enhances corrosion resistance in seawater. Used for marine hardware, propeller shafts, and pump components.

C23000 (Red Brass):
Contains 85% copper and 15% zinc. Offers higher corrosion resistance and a distinctive reddish color. Common in plumbing fittings, heat exchangers, and architectural trim.

C28000 (Muntz Metal):
A 60/40 brass (60% Cu, 40% Zn) with good hot-workability and corrosion resistance. Often used in heat exchangers, condenser plates, and architectural cladding.

C85700 (Leaded High-Strength Brass):
Contains additional elements like lead, aluminum, and manganese for improved strength and castability. Used for heavy-duty industrial and marine components.

Consider Fabrication and Post-Processing

Machining: If your project involves complex machining, prioritize free-cutting brasses like C36000.

Welding & Joining: Avoid leaded brasses for welding; choose alloys like C21000 or C23000 instead.

Finishing: Some brasses take plating, polishing, or patination better than others. Discuss with your supplier early in the design phase.

Environmental and Regulatory Factors

Lead-Free Requirements: For potable water or consumer products, choose lead-free alloys like C69300 or C87850.

Extreme Environments: For chemical exposure or high temperatures, verify the alloy's chemical compatibility and thermal stability.

Our factory

Our modern production base is equipped with advanced full-process production lines dedicated to the manufacturing of copper and copper alloy products. The factory features precision smelting, continuous casting, high-pressure extrusion, high-speed rolling, and precision cutting equipment, ensuring strict control over every step from copper ingot to finished product. We possess strong R&D and customization capabilities, enabling us to produce various specifications and tempers of copper tubes, plates, rods, wires, and ultra-thin foils in accordance with international standards (such as ASTM, EN, JIS) and specific customer requirements. Our products are widely used in various industries, including refrigeration, electronics, power, transportation, and construction.

Copper product packaging

We fully understand that secure packaging is essential for the flawless delivery of products. Tailored to the characteristics of different products, we employ customized professional packaging solutions: copper tubes and rods are typically secured with anti-rust inner liners and sturdy wooden crates or iron-frame boxes to prevent impact and deformation during transit; copper plates, strips, and foils are first covered with protective film, placed in a dry environment, wrapped with waterproof paper and moisture-proof materials, and finally packed into reinforced plywood crates or steel coil boxes to effectively resist moisture and mechanical damage; wires are neatly wound onto wooden or steel reels and firmly strapped. All packaging is clearly labeled and compliant with export standards, ensuring that your goods maintain their excellent factory condition even after long-distance sea transportation and multiple handlings.
