Selection and testing of titanium castings

Mar 24, 2025

Titanium castings have been widely used as important components in the mechanical field. Compared with traditional metal castings, titanium castings have the advantages of lightness, strength, corrosion resistance, etc., and have important applications in aviation, aerospace, automotive, medical and other fields. However, when using titanium castings, material selection and testing are very important aspects.
I. Selection of titanium castings
1. The type of titanium alloy selection in the selection of titanium casting materials, you need to choose different titanium alloys according to the actual application environment. At present, there are many kinds of titanium alloys, such as α + β type, β type, α type and other types. Among them, the commonly used ones are TA2, TA6V, TC4, Ti-6242 and so on.

- TA2 titanium alloy: It has good workmanship, weldability, high plasticity, good low temperature, microcorrosion and heat steam resistance.
- TA6V alloy: typical α+β type titanium alloy with high strength, corrosion and fatigue resistance, widely used in aviation and aerospace.
- TC4 alloy: one of the more homogeneous compositions of α+β type titanium alloys, with high mechanical properties and good corrosion resistance.
- Ti-6242 alloy: β-type titanium alloy with high strength, high plasticity and good thermal expansion properties, which is widely used in the field of aviation manufacturing.
2. Titanium alloy purity requirements of titanium alloy purity of titanium alloy on mechanical properties, physical properties, process performance and other aspects have a great impact. Usually the total impurities corresponding to the purity is less than 0.1%.
3. the impact of other product requirements in the selection of titanium casting materials, but also need to consider the product performance requirements, use requirements, the current state of the production process and development trends and other factors on the selection of materials.
Second, the detection of titanium castings
1. Appearance test production of titanium castings, the first appearance of the test, to find defects. Appearance testing includes visual observation and microscopic inspection with a magnifying glass or microscope.
2. X-ray inspection X-ray inspection is a non-contact detection method for the detection of internal defects in titanium castings. Internal defects are found by recording the absorption of X-rays by the titanium casting through X-rays.
3. ultrasonic detection ultrasonic detection is also a non-contact detection method for surface and internal defects. Material defects are detected using specialized ultrasonic probes and acoustic energy.
4. magnetic particle detection Magnetic particle detection is an important method for detecting surface defects in titanium castings. Magnetic powder particles as a medium, sprayed on the surface of titanium castings, through the magnetic field effect to gather the magnetic powder particles, to find surface defects.
5. Coating Inspection Coating inspection is aimed at defects such as coating adhesion, surface morphology and texture. Optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and other inspection methods are usually used.
6. Conventional Physical Property Testing Conventional physical property testing includes mechanical property testing, chemical property testing, thermodynamic property testing and other aspects. Commonly used test methods include tensile test, impact test, hardness test, chemical test and so on.
