How Much Do You Know About Copper Foil For Lithium Batteries?

Copper foil acts as the carrier of anode active material and anode collector in the structure of lithium battery. Typical lithium-ion battery structure mainly includes four parts: positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte and diaphragm. Lithium battery charging, added to the battery poles of the potential to force the positive electrode embedded lithium compounds release lithium ions, through the diaphragm embedded in the lamellar structure of the graphite anode; discharge lithium ions from the lamellar structure of the graphite precipitation, and the positive electrode embedded lithium compounds to combine the lithium ions to achieve the movement, generating electric current.

Copper foil has good electrical conductivity, flexibility and moderate potential, resistance to winding and rolling, manufacturing technology is mature, the process will act as a carrier of graphite and other anode active materials, and at the same time, as an anode collector, the current generated by the battery active material will be pooled together to produce a greater output current.

The quality and cost of lithium copper foil account for about 13% and 8% of the total quality and cost of a typical lithium battery, respectively, and it is one of the key materials in lithium batteries. So how is such a critical material processed?

There are two main manufacturing methods for copper foil: electrolysis and calendering. Electrolytic copper foil mainly uses copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte, while calendered copper foil mainly uses alloys such as brass and copper violet as the raw material, and is produced through the calendering process.
