Copper rod is a kind of non-ferrous metal processing rod with high electrical conductivity.

There are many types of copper rods, including red copper rods, brass rods, tin bronze rods and white copper rods. Different types of copper rods have different molding processes and different characteristics. Copper rod forming processes include extrusion, rolling, continuous casting, drawing, etc.

They are roughly divided into several categories: copper rods, brass rods, bronze rods, white copper rods, etc. The most important ones are brass rods and copper rods; there will be confusion in our daily purchases. So what is the difference between copper rods and brass rods?

Different materials have different characteristics and uses, and the prices are also different. Copper rods are more expensive than brass rods.

Differences in use

brass rod

Brass rod is a rod-shaped object made of an alloy of copper and zinc. It is named after its yellow color. Its melting point is 934~967 degrees. Different zinc content will also have different colors. For example, if the zinc content is 18%-20%, it will be red-yellow, while if the zinc content is 20%-30%, it will be brown-yellow. In addition, brass has a unique sound when struck, so Eastern instruments such as gongs, cymbals, bells, and horns, as well as Western brass instruments are all made of brass.

Brass has good mechanical properties and wear resistance, and can be used to manufacture precision instruments, ship parts, gun shells, auto parts, medical parts, electrical accessories and various mechanical supporting materials, automobile synchronizer rings, etc. .

Copper rod

Copper rods are named after their purple-red color. They have good electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance and processing properties, and can be welded and brazed. It is not necessarily pure copper. Sometimes a small amount of deoxidizing elements or other elements are added to improve the material and performance, so it is also classified as a copper alloy.

Processed bars can be divided into:

Ordinary copper (T1, T2, T3, T4)

Oxygen-free copper (TU1, TU2 and high-purity, vacuum oxygen-free copper)

Deoxidized copper (TUP, TUMn)

Special copper (adding a small amount of alloying elements, such as arsenic copper, tellurium copper, silver copper)

The electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of red copper are second only to silver, and it has good electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and plasticity; it is easy to process by hot pressing and cold pressing, and is used in the electrical industry. Many products are used in the manufacture of wires and cables, brushes, special electro-corroded copper for electric sparks and other products that require very strong conductivity.

Copper has good corrosion resistance in the atmosphere, seawater and certain non-oxidizing acids (hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid), alkali, salt solutions and various organic acids (acetic acid, citric acid) and is used in the chemical industry.

Feature differences

The density is different: the density of red copper rod is 8.9-8.95 (electrolytic copper), which is slightly higher; the density of brass rod is 8.52-8.62 (rolled brass), which is smaller.

Different compositions: the main component of red copper rods is copper, and the copper content can be as high as 99.95%; the components of brass rods include copper and zinc, with a copper content of 56% to 68%; special brass may also have other impurities, so they can be easily differentiated from pure ingredients.

Difference in strength: Brass rod has more ingredients, so its strength is higher, but the main ingredient of red copper rod is copper, with basically no other impurities, so the strength of red copper is relatively lower than that of brass.

Copper rod forming process

Although there are many differences between them, the production process is the same; the copper rod forming process includes extrusion, rolling, continuous casting, drawing, etc.

1. Extrusion-(rolling)-drawing-(annealing)-finishing-finished product.

2. Continuous casting (upward casting, horizontal or wheel type, crawler type, dipping) - (rolling) - drawing - (annealing) - finishing - finished product.

3. Continuous extrusion-stretching-(annealing)-finishing-finished product.
